This rare and unusual engraving is part of a sixteen piece collection of subjects dedicated to the portrayal of ancient instruments of observation and measure. Each piece is created using a hand engraved copper plate. The plate, which is an outline of the image, is then hand-pressed onto a special antiquated cotton canvas. Our Italian artisans then begin painting by hand, inch by inch using rustic water colors to bring this piece of art to life. Begin your collection with a few, or enjoy the entire series.
This piece represents an astrolabe by Hevel from the year 1644. An astrolabe is an astronomical instrument for taking the altitude of the sun or stars and for the solution of other problems in astronomy and navigation: used by Greek astronomers from about 200 B.C. and by Arab astronomers from the Middle Ages until superseded by the sextant.
Dimensions: 8.5 x 12 inches
