This map of the world is the symbol of medieval Cartography. It was begun by Fra’ Mauro and completed by his disciples which is certified by the fact that the monk died in 1459 and on the back of the map an inscription dates it back to 25th August 1460. The map, originally drawn on parchment and mounted on wood in a square frame which measured 223 cm each side, was enriched by about 400 inscriptions with descriptions and information on a number of places in the world according to the geographical knowledge of the period, that is before the discovery of America. Europe, Africa and Asia are the continents represented. The orientation of the map is significantly interesting from an historic and cartographic point of view: it is not oriented to the East which was the current practice of the Christian tradition but to the South according to the arab map-making tradition. On the four corners there are illustrations representing the medieval concepts of the Tolemaic and Aristotelian homcentrieity system. Particularly interesting are the images on the bottom left hand corner which illustrate the Earthly Paradise and the Earth as it is described in the Scriptures.

The size and special loops on the top and bottom of this map allow it to be hung using our optional kit or a curtain rod of your choice.

This particular map is printed on the highest quality stock, then individually mounted on to an antiquated linen and cotton canvas in sections which fold easily, and is encased in a velvet bag, inside of a luxurious burgundy gift box with the map’s title written across the corner cover.
