Small Map Dimensions: 18 x 22 inches
So the translation goes: Contrary to what used to be done in the 17th century to describe the whole globe (the two standard hemispheres), for this map Piscator used a representation based on a previous one by Mercator, which, even if revised and corrected, is still valid, on the making of nautical charts. The basic principle is a cylindrical map projection where meridians and parallels are straight lines, and the east –west stretching away from the equator corresponds to a north-south stretching. Besides the technical aspects, the map is stunning for its artistic aspect, and the whole world can be viewed uninterruptedly. The vignettes on the margins, which add a severe aspect to the map, are noteworthy. The four corners are filled with allegorical representations of the continents, and on the left and right side city views alternate with national figures in their typical costumes.
All maps are Made in Italy, outlined using a hand tooled copper press, painted by hand using water color, mounted on an antiquated, linen and cotton canvas in sections which fold easily, and are encased in a soft bag, inside of a luxurious burgundy gift box with the map’s title written across the corner cover.
Maps may be hung using any method of your choice including professional framing (available upon request) or be displayed atop tables or other flat surfaces. |
