Worldmap by by N.I. Piscator (1656)

Latin Title: Nova Totious Terrarum Orbis Geographica ac Hydrographica Tabula

Large Map Dimensions: 29 x 36 inches

So the translation goes: Contrary to what used to be done in the 17th century to describe the whole globe (the two standard hemispheres), for this map Piscator used a representation based on a previous one by Mercator, which, even if revised and corrected, is still valid, on the making of nautical charts. The basic principle is a cylindrical map projection where meridians and parallels are straight lines, and the east west stretching away from the equator corresponds to a north-south stretching. Besides the technical aspects, the map is stunning for its artistic aspect, and the whole world can be viewed uninterruptedly. The vignettes on the margins, which add a severe aspect to the map, are noteworthy. The four corners are filled with allegorical representations of the continents, and on the left and right side city views alternate with national figures in their typical costumes.

All maps are Made in Italy, outlined using a hand tooled copper press, painted by hand using water color, mounted on an antiquated, linen and cotton canvas in sections which fold easily, and are encased in a soft bag, inside of a luxurious burgundy gift box with the maps title written across the corner cover.

Maps may be hung using any method of your choice including professional framing (available upon request) or be displayed atop tables or other flat surfaces.

Latin Title: Typus Orbis Terrarum
Dimensions: 26 x 18 inches
or exactly 66 x 46 centimeters

The story as the Italians tell us: Typus Orbis Terrarum by A. Ortelio (XVI century) Abramo Ortelio(1527-1598 was a typical 16th century intellectual, an interested voyager and keen on antiques. From this passion stemmed his subsequent interest for Cartography and in 1564 he published his first map of the world. A man of great stature and author of the most important cartography works of the 16th century Abramo Ortelio realized this map of America which is impressive for its similarity to the real world not evident in other contemporary maps. An important feature in all his production is also the exquisite aesthetic craftsmanship of the paper, its rich and decorated shape as well as the beauty of the lines. Reproduced according to Bordones oval projection this map represents the continent the way it was known at the time.

Map of the World by Fra Mauro (1460 circa)

Map Dimensions: 5.5 x 5.5 feet, 66.5 x 66.5 inches
or exactly 169 x 169 centimeters
Optional Hanging Kit

This map of the world is the symbol of medieval Cartography. It was begun by Fra Mauro and completed by his disciples which is certified by the fact that the monk died in 1459 and on the back of the map an inscription dates it back to 25th August 1460. The map, originally drawn on parchment and mounted on wood in a square frame which measured 223 cm each side, was enriched by about 400 inscriptions with descriptions and information on a number of places in the world according to the geographical knowledge of the period, that is before the discovery of America. Europe, Africa and Asia are the continents represented. The orientation of the map is significantly interesting from an historic and cartographic point of view: it is not oriented to the East which was the current practice of the Christian tradition but to the South according to the arab map-making tradition. On the four corners there are illustrations representing the medieval concepts of the Tolemaic and Aristotelian homcentrieity system. Particularly interesting are the images on the bottom left hand corner which illustrate the Earthly Paradise and the Earth as it is described in the Scriptures.

The size and special loops on the top and bottom of this map allow it to be hung using our optional kit or a curtain rod of your choice.

This particular map is printed on the highest quality stock, then individually mounted on to an antiquated linen and cotton canvas in sections which fold easily, and is encased in a velvet bag, inside of a luxurious burgundy gift box with the maps title written across the corner cover.

World Map by H. Jaillot (1694)

Small Map Dimensions: 19 x 24 inches or precisely 48 x 62 centimeters

So the translation goes: Hubert Jaillot, who was born in 1632 and died in 1712, was talented more for his few exquisite creations and for the elegance of the ornamental carvings that embellished his maps than for a copious cartography production. This map of the world, which Jaillot dedicated to the duke of Borgogna, is a valid example. Printed in Paris in 1694 the map is impressive for the allegorical representations on its margins.

Map Dimensions: 27.5 x 35 inches
or exactly 70 x 89 centimeters. Item: mplhum

So the translation goes: The English cartographer G. Humble is certainly one of the most significant cartographers of the XVII century. This New and Accurate Map of the world is a good example to clearly understand the value of his work. This map of the world, which was realized at the beginning of the century and first published in 1626, is particularly outstanding for its allegorical representations. Water, fire, earth and air are represented by figures which give a pleasant impression to the map as does the representation of the solar and lunar eclipses and the armillary sphere.

Map Dimensions: 27.5 x 43 inches
or exactly 70 x 110 centimeters (mcifidew)

So the translation goes: Frederick De Wit was a famous cartographer mainly interested in realizing representations of our planet. However, amongst his many publications there are representations of cities and this map is a shining example. It is an exquisite example of relief map of the city of Florence which was realized, as was the current practice, with copper-engraving mounted onto a removable cloth, for easy transport. Our replica reproduces all the above-mentioned features to convey the charm of the period.

A Perspective of Venice by Julius (1600 circa)

Map Dimensions: 19 x 39 inches
or 49 x 100 centimeters (mcivejul)

So the translation goes:
Although this work of art was created by an artist that is for the most part unknown, this graphic perspective of Venice or Venezia is amongst the most attractive cartographic maps in its own right from an artistic standpoint. Created from a birds eye view perspective, the sheer beauty and harmonious flow of this map, is astonishing. Datable certainly towards the 1600

Map of Italy by Matteo Greuter (1657)

Full Tapestry Dimensions: 45 x 82 inches (4 x 7 feet)
or exactly 114 x 208 centimeters (mitmggr)

The size and special loops on the top and bottom of this map allow it to be hung using a curtain rod or rod of your choice. So the translation goes: Matteo Greuter was born in Strasburg in 1556 and worked in Lyons, Avignon and Rome. He distinguished himself for his extremely accurate and elegant technique which found its peak expression in this beautiful map of Italy produced in 12 pages. The map is the largest one ever published. There are three rare versions of the map and the one we propose is the first one published in 1567 in Venice by Stefano Mozzo Scolari. The second version was printed and published in 1675 in Bologna by Pietro Todeschi and the third was published in 1695 in Rome by the printing company of Domenico De Rossi. The map is quite large (1.15x 2.20) and is produced to a scale of approximately 1:540,000. The place names are in Italian and there are allegorical representations of various regions as well as perspective maps of some cities. The three major islands are shown separately. The curious aspect of this map is Greuters decision to present it horizontally, and the reasons for this arrangement are explained in the scroll on the map itself.

All maps are Made in Italy, outlined using a hand tooled copper press, painted by hand using water color, mounted on an antiquated, linen and cotton canvas in sections which fold easily and are encased in a soft bag, inside of a luxurious burgundy gift box with the maps title written across the corner cover.

Italy by Sanson

Map Dimensions: 24 x 36 inches
or exactly 62 x 92 centimeters (mitsan)

So the translation goes: This beautiful map of Italy is not quite accurate for the period in which it was realized and the lack of instruments. Realized by the geographer S. Sanson, it was printed in 1672 in the printing company of another famous cartographer, H. Jaillot. Engraved on copper, the map was mounted onto a removable cloth. On the west it extends beyond the French boundaries and it includes Dalmatia on the east. The orography is rendered in perspective with the system of rises. The place names are partly in Italian and partly in French. On the bottom left-hand side of the map there is a chart with the different scales, and a dedication to Louis XIV of France.

Map Dimensions 37 x 49 inches
or exactly 93 x 124 centimeters (mitriza)

So the translation goes: This beautiful and accurate representation of Italy in 1806, made to a scale of approximately 1:248,000 is the same as the one published four years earlier by the Florentine bookseller Giuseppe Molini, with the only addition of the roads and the post offices. The map was made by the famous geographer A. Rizzi-Zannoni and then engraved on copper under Molinis direction. The map representation is by Cassini with the Prime Meridian at Paris. The orography is in perspective with oblique light shading. The map includes eight graphic scales with Italian, French and German measurements. Particularly exquisite is the artistic cartouche on the bottom right-hand side. The following is the announcement of the publication of the map on the Gazzetta Universale in1802 which used to be published in Florence twice a week.

Half Moon of the Villa Medicea di Castello

Large: 27.5 x 35.5 inches (mlucas GR)

So the translation goes: In 1599, the Flemmish painter Giusto Utens completed a series of half moon paintings of the Medici Villas erected in Florence with the intent to honor the Medici Family. Twelve were completed, five of which we propose to be the most interesting and are available through Epica. Contrasting with the other hand painted maps that we offer, these are not exact reproductions of the originals, but rather, are a free interpretation of the completed paintings by Utens.

Maps may be hung using any method of your choice including professional framing (available upon request) or be displayed atop tables or other flat surfaces.
